SurfSafe
SurfSafe makes it easy for beach-goers to monitor weather and ocean conditions.
Background
Our task was to design an application that provided its users with information needed to stay safe at the beach. Using data such as the UV index, cloud cover, and harmful algal blooms (HABs), we needed to make recommendations for when to go to the beach and when to avoid it.
Resources
We used data from Weather Underground, NOAA, and EPA to calculate safe locations and times of day.
Challenges faced
Finding data on HABs was difficult. We were unable to successfully obtain an API key from one potential source, so we used data directly from NOAA's website. However, with the correct API keys, we would be able to use the same code to dynamically warn the users of HABs in close proximity as new HABs appear.
