TEAM I-NUTRITION

RICE (Oryza Sativa) AS A CASE STUDY

  • Challenge: What’s for Dinner
  • The issue of mal-nutrition and under-nutrition is of global concern as adopted by the WHO.
  • Climatic Effects on crops e.t.c and the profound solution.

CASE STUDY

Rice (Oryza Sativa)

Rice is an annual crop and is one of the world’s most important cereals, and consumed more by over 6.5billion people.

LIFE CYCLE OF RICE

It takes 3-9months before rice can be harvested

THE SOURCE OF WASTE FOR RICE PRODUCTION

  • Rice husk from paddy (Oryza Sativa) is one example of alternative material that has a great potential.
  • Rice husk are a major by-product of rice milling industry which is in most times commonly for deed stock.

NUTRITIONAL INGREDIENTS FOR RICE PREPARATION

  • Vegetable (Vitamins)
  • Reduce the risk of many chronic diseases, e.g. Stroke, which is very common in Africa, cancer and heart disease.
  • Oil (Fat & Oil)
  • Salt
  • Preserves food and also facilitates sending signals in nerves & muscle.

NOTE: Inadequate intake of salts like calcium e.t.c can cause heat disease.

  • Pepper
  • Red Pepper are a source of Vitamin A and C.
  • It contains more than 200% of your daily vitamin intake.
  • It is a source of B6 which also help to prevent anemia.
  • Carrot
  • It helps to reduce cholesterol.
  • It helps to prevent heart attack, warding off of certain cancer, improving vision and reducing the signs of premature aging.
  • It has the ability to increase the health of your skin, boost the immune system, improve digestion, and increase cardiovascular health in variety of ways.

Climatic change impacts; Crop yield; Food security.

Global food security threatened in the 21st century to supply sufficient food for the increasing population while sustaining the already stressed environment. Climate change have already caused significant impact on food security.

Studies on climatic impacts and adaptation strategies on crops are increasingly becoming major areas of concern.

Food is one of society’s key sensitivities to climate. A year of not enough or too much rainfall, a hot spell or cold snap at the wrong time.

Challenges encountered in the course of the project.

  • Time Constraint: Inability to work with the stipulated 48hours as approved by NASA. A total of 20-30hours was given here in Nigeria which hindered our performance.
  • Environmental Constraint: Unconducive environment in the course of the challenges which was a major setback to our team.
  • Unavailability of internet facilities to fast-track our research work or project.
  • Wrong perception of judges: Wrong ideology of the judges. The judges lack basic concept of knowledge towards Art, Science, nature and Nutrition which also affected our project work.
