The Challenge | Small Spaces, Big Ideas!

Create crew-friendly designs for a habitat and/or its multi-use furniture, to be used for isolation studies on Earth that are researching the environmental and human dimensions of life on another planet.

Inspiration

We were inspired by the movie "The Martian" and the possibility that humans could live on other planets, surviving and even thriving there. Our design comes in a time where interplanetary space travel is poised to be "The Next Big Thing" and something that we are all looking towards in the future.

What it does

Our Interior Design layout is sustainable, functional, humanitarian and beautiful. Our design of HI-SEAS, called Crawwwl, focuses on solving the problems that the previous experiments simply aren't tackling. Crawwwl is unique because it targets the psychological dynamic: it orchestrates interior design to prevent arguments and mental exhaustion in the long-term, due to extremely close proximity living in the Hab. By providing each team member with ample socialization in ideal community spaces, as well as private study and chill rooms that allow intellectual recharge, the crew stays cohesive, hard-working, happy, and in top mental and physical shape.

How we built it

We built it using SolidWorks, AutoCAD and TinkerCAD, 3D printed it at SteamLabs, and wrote the website in JavaScript, HTML and CSS. We also used version control through Git within three developers.

Challenges we ran into

Designing an interior layout with an extremely limited amount of space is difficult. We had just under 11 metres of radial diameter to work with, and portioning space properly was extremely crucial.

Furthermore, it was difficult to write the website, as for many of us, it was the first time working as Web Developers. Javascript and CSS can be very weird at times.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

1. Five (Shail, Fanny, Caroline, Tasmin, Nicholas) first time hackers out of a team of seven.

2. Building a beautiful interior design.

3. Building a beautiful website to present our design.

4. 3D Printing our Design.

5. Getting stuck outside for half an hour after midnight (Ryan).
