Application
- Space sector: development of software in order to allow the HI-SEAS crew to plan their daily energy consumption. The habitat’s activities that are based on energy output from the solar panels are prioritized, according to the current average power production. Then a schedule of tasks is suggested. The same software can be exploited in other space applications which incorporate or depend on the harvest of solar energy.
- Private sector: development of a smartphone application to plan the daily energy consumption for households that use solar panels. A schedule of tasks is provided according to the priority of household necessities.
The future
- Further develop software to support future space exploration missions
- Create a “smart” solar panel by analyzing live feed meteorological data. The energy consumption planning is done based on the expected energy output, considering factors such as the predicted periods of sunshine
- Connect the above smart panel to the Internet of Things (IoT), and create an autonomous system able to attend to individual tasks
- Incorporate machine learning algorithms to further customize the tool to each user’s needs
