The Challenge | Small Spaces, Big Ideas!

Create crew-friendly designs for a habitat and/or its multi-use furniture, to be used for isolation studies on Earth that are researching the environmental and human dimensions of life on another planet.

Cylindrical Hub

Our Hub is a design simulating the conditions we may face throub the process of gnuilding spaces on mars in the coming era. gYhe Conditions existed on Mars mibt be similar to the conditions on Wadi Rum - Jordan.

BZUARCH114

The main concept was to design a hub which is easy to transform from the factory to the site and satisfy the main challenges that have been provided by NASA .

The structure could be easily carried along the rocket traveling from factory to site. The whole structure would be carried in a cylindrical form .This could be achieved by the structure design which consists of segments able to be dismantled and installed by the crew of the journey. It could be also moved from site to site after finishing the research on the first one. This is a sustainability achievement.

The system consists of a main structural core which drills the sand and the rocks. Around the core, the mechanical systems of the hub are installed and followed by the staircase. This can help in the maintenance of the mechanical system. The staircase is light steel structure carried on the two Polyethylene slaps. The slaps consists of precast segments connected together also by the crew on the site.

We were thinking about how can domes be built in this stormy weather , and the ability to of the dome to withstand. Moreover, there is a need for a thermal insulation material so we can minimize the amount of heat transformation. This means minimize the amount of energy needed to heat the hub.

The dome structure consists of rods and rings. This system carries the coverage and resists lateral forces .A high Strength Scrim Reinforced Polyethylene is uesd to cover the dome, the dome will be a polygonal shape . This material is used because it is a linear low density polyethylene Geomembranes reinforced with a heavy dense scrim reinforcement. In addition to excellent dimensional stability the reinforcement provides unmatched tear and tensile strength. These Geomembranes are formulated with thermal and UV stabilizers to assure a long service life.

The Benefits of Scrim Reinforced Polyethylene:

• Light weight.

• Large Panels.

• UV resistant.

• Highly tear resistant.

Steel is used as a material for the frame members. The properties of structural steel result from both its chemical composition and its method of manufacture, including processing during fabrication.
Product standards define the limits for composition ,quality and performance and these limits are used or presumed by structural designers.
Yield strength is the most common property that the designer will need as it is the basis used for most of the rules given in design codes.

Other mechanical properties of structural steel that are important to the designer include:

Modulus of elasticity, E = 210,000 N/mm² .

Shear modulus, G = E/[2(1 + ν)] N/mm², often taken as 81,000 N/mm² .

Poisson's ratio, ν = 0.3 .

Coefficient of thermal expansion, α = 12 x 10-6/°C (in the ambient temperature range).

Durability :

A further important property is that of corrosion prevention. Although special corrosion resistant steels are available these are not normally used in building construction. The exception to this is weathering steel .

The most common means of providing corrosion protection to construction steel is by painting or galvanizing. The type and the degree of coating protection required depends on the degree of exposure, location, life design , etc. In many cases, under internal dry situations as in the Mars, no corrosion protection coatings are required other than appropriate fire protection .

The ground floor includes the common spaces ; working and social space ,laboratory, storage, kitchen and dining areas.

The first floor includes personal bed and wc areas for each member of the crew, a clinic and a common shower.

The interior walls consists of a light steel mish carrying the insolated fabric coverage. These layers are rolled into cylindrical shape before transforming to site. When reaching the site ,they are blowed with air to shape the walls.

The bed room have no bed .Instead, there is an empty space with sleep mattress similar to wall system.

The interior space is devided to provide social spaces by making the open to below area

It also gives equal spaces for each inhabitant for sleeping and practicing activities .
