Develop a tool to trace invasive species in your neighborhood over time!

ForestTrackers

We are so excited to brainstorm ways to modernize the Picture Post Network to monitor invasive species in our forests with advances in technology, especially pocket-sized electronics like Raspberry Pi.

ForestTrackers

Picture Post is a hands-on program that gives teachers, students, and citizens alike the means to monitor the effects of climate change in their own neighborhood, while also contributing observations to a national network of Picture Post sites.

A Picture Post is an easy-to-use and inexpensive platform for repeatedly taking digital photographs as a standardized set of images of the entire 360°landscape. Participants place their digital camera or smartphone on the picture post platform to take and upload a series of digital photographs to the website to create a long-term record of change.

The photographs become a rich data collection that supports climate change educational programs and can be integrated into many climate change curricula. The program is free and open to anyone.

The University of New Hampshire hosts the data, supports users, and offers information webinars about the program and topics related to climate science, on request. We are actively encouraging schools, nature centers, and community organizations to build partnerships around setting up, taking pictures, analyzing and interpreting their observations to benefit their communities.

See the current project at the Picture Post website.

We want to expand the capabilities for Picture Posts to fill in data by taking panoramic photos automatically and by processing images to show areas of interest, change, and problems from invasive species to anyone who comes to the post, not just on the web or in our newsletter, as we do now.
