Space Apps Challenge 2017

Hephaestus Team, an interdisciplinary group of students of engineering and biology from Cordoba Argentina, introduces SafeFire in response to the challenge proposed by NASA "AND YOU CAN HELP FIRE FIRE!"

Forest fires are the cause of immense economic, social and environmental losses. In the last years they have destroyed thousands of hectares of natural park, forests, fields and villages. To cite a current example we have the case of Chile where at the end of January a forest fire destroyed more than 1600 houses and left 11 dead. What would have happened if the first response had been faster?

Our solution is to integrate technology with the community and raising awareness.

During the event we have developed an application that provides in real time the infrared data obtained by the VIIRS satellite on a map of area of interest processed by our algorithm.

Through it, each one can enter and see the fire situation of their locality next to the firemen, being an information open to all. Thanks to the fact that each day, we are more and more connected, if an individual sees a fire can without the need to have an app installed, by our website, upload a geo-positioned photo with a description of the fact. In this way emergency agencies can more quickly determine the alert level of the situation and act appropriately. In addition, an alternative means of communication via SMS was included because there are still many areas without mobile data coverage. The system will receive it in a certain format, there by our algorithms will search in its database the emergency center corresponding to the area or region depending on the direction of the message and redirect it instantly without the intervention of an operator, significantly reducing the response time. A reply will also be sent confirming the delivery and in case the format has been incorrect, it will be indicated by a message as it should be written.

This system will create an awareness in the people about the environment that surrounds him, making him an active individual in the cause of environmental care. So remember that forests are part of the environment and with "SafeFire" we can protect them!

Los incendios forestales son los causantes de inmensas perdida económicas, sociales y medio ambientales. En los últimos años han destruido miles de hectáreas de parque naturales, bosques, campos y pueblos. Por citar un ejemplo actual tenemos el caso de Chile donde a fines de enero un incendio forestal destruyo más de 1600 casas y dejo 11 fallecidos. ¿Qué hubiera pasado si la primer respuesta hubiese sido más rápida?

Nuestra solución se basa en integrar la tecnología con la comunidad y hacer conciencia.

Durante el evento hemos desarrollado una aplicación que brinda en tiempo real los datos infrarrojos obtenidos por el satélite VIIRS sobre un mapa de área de interés procesado por nuestro algoritmo.

A través de la misma cada uno puede ingresar y ver la situación de incendios de su localidad junto a los bomberos, siendo una información abierta para todos. Gracias a que cada día estamos más conectados, si un individuo ve un incendio puede sin la necesidad de tener una app instalada, por nuestra pagina web pueden subir una foto geo-posicionada con una descripción del hecho. De esta forma los organismos de defensa pueden determinar más rápido el nivel de alerta de la situación y actuar adecuadamente. Además se incluyó un medio de comunicación alternativo por SMS debido a que todavía hay bastantes zonas sin cobertura de datos móviles. El sistema lo va a recibir de un determinado formato, allí por medio de algoritmos va a buscar en su base de datos el centro de emergencia correspondiente al área o región dependiendo de la dirección del mensaje y redirigirlo instantáneamente sin la intervención de un operario, reduciendo significativamente el tiempo de respuesta. También se enviará una respuesta confirmando la entrega y en caso de que el formato haya sido incorrecto, se indicara por un mensaje como debe ser escrito.

Este sistema creara una conciencia en las personas sobre el medio que lo rodea, convirtiéndolo en un individuo activo en la causa de cuidar el medio ambiente. Por lo tanto recuerde que los bosques son parte del medio ambiente y con “SafeFire” podemos protegerlos!
