The Challenge | When Landslides Strike

Design an easy-to-use tool to allow the public to discover and understand landslide data, and to contribute their own observations for use by emergency managers.

Mass landslide early warning system

WreckEC

Identify the landslides produced on the roads (Calacalí - La Independencia and Aloag - Santo Domingo) in the provinces of Pichincha and Santo Domingo, respectively, which have historically been most affected by these natural events.

The project was carried out with the construction of a mass movement risk map on the ArcGis Web platform, using the following geographic variables:

  1. Land use
  2. Slopes
  3. Roads
  4. Population centers

Likewise, the variables of Land Use and Slope of vector format were converted to raster, in order to obtain a single geographical coverage in which the aforementioned data are integrated. This allowed identifying zones in which there is greater vulnerability of landslides taking into account the effect of the gradient and the aspect of the slope in the water erosion.

With the help of the NASA EOSDIS Worldview Dynamic Map, we obtain real-time precipitation data (mm / hr) with which information is crossed to obtain, areas susceptible to landslides.

For the presentation of this project we developed a web system using HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, for the latter we used the angular library for the development of the frontend. This system includes the maps mentioned above (ArcGis Web - NASA EOSDIS Worldview), of programming part in the server.

The user interface builds an open database in which are recorded the events produced on the highways are recorded: Calacalí - La Independencia and Aloag - Santo Domingo. In the same way together with the geolocation of the user obtained in the web page (JavaScript) can register an event and share it in a social network for immediate disclosure.
