What is NASA Space Apps Challenge?

48h.space / Sweden

Space Apps is a 2 days global hackathon, gathering each year tens of thousands of problem solvers around the globe practicing collaborative problem solving in order to produce relevant open-source solutions addressing problems affecting life both on Earth and in space.

In 2016, 15,000 participants from 61 countries teamed up and developed 1300+ projects.

Coders, scientists, designers, storytellers, makers, builders, technologists, students, engineers, entrepreneurs, artists, and problem solvers of all types, everyone enthusiastic about space, this event is for you!

Here are some of the reasons why you should participate.

What are we going to do this year?

2017 edition features five categories of challenges

  • The Earth and Us
  • Planetary Blues
  • Warning! Danger Ahead!,
  • Our Ecological Neighborhood
  • Ideate & Create!

A preview of the challenges can be found on the Space Apps blog.

Gather a team of people with a diverse background, choose your challenge and register. During the event's two days you will work together to develop an innovative solution to your challenge (be it a website, a mobile app, a concept or a hardware prototype).
Your team will present the solution to the event audience including an expert jury.
The best solutions will then compete on a global level!

What do I need to know?

There are no costs attached to your participation. Everything is free and you get some food and all the coffee you can drink.

You should bring your laptop with needed software already installed, a charger, mouse and mouse-pad, notebooks, pens and pencils, comfortable clothes, headphones and music, glasses (sight, not drinking :) ) or medication if necessary, and whatever else you might need to complete your project.
